While I am all in favor of our small towns and their culture standing the test of time, many of us, like myself, don’t live in small towns—we live in medium-sized places. Over 50,000 people, but well under 1 million. The middle child of urbanism; at least as it seems to me.

So, the question on my mind lately has been, “can you save the medium sized city from inevitable destruction?” The unfortunate answer is, I’m not sure you can (at least not most of us).

The problem with these medium-sized places is primarily how they’re built. Or, more accurately, how they were destroyed.

Large cities like New York, Boston, or San Francisco are older. They were built in the traditional way before cars became ubiquitous, and so Urban Renewal and the Federal Highways Act couldn’t completely destroy them. Now, it did a number on them, but they still had the bones to be more easily fixed (as we’re seeing now).

Small towns have the opposite blessings and curses, in many ways. They weren’t economically powerful or important enough to run an interstate highway through (though their main streets are usually still state highway). They weren’t large enough to create suburbs around and make their useful urban fabric into something weak and car-dependent. Their traditional development pattern and downtown generally avoided destruction.

Medium-sized cities, though, often have the worst of both. Medium-sized cities often sprawled during the post-War era when there was an exodus to the suburbs and suburban business parks and were important enough to have highways run through them to facilitate interstate and intrastate commerce.

Take my city, for example. Tyler, Texas has roughly 110,000 people. Not a major metro, but not a small town by any metric. Tyler is not a large suburb that’s part of some horrific, sprawling metropolitan area (looking at you, DFW). It is a small, stand-alone city, and the regional hub of East Texas. It’s a city with small suburbs around it. That creates its own set of problems, but that’s not something I have time to treat here.

Subscribe now

It’s a city I love dearly, to be very clear, and I do tend to think that the city government is doing a good job. They seem to understand the need to rebuild the city into something built for people instead of cars, but boy do they have a lot working against them.

The problem with living in an appreciating, medium-sized place is that it’s still affordable enough that cardboard box quality home-builders and every mediocre chain restaurant under the sun can buy your land, develop it, and then tell you about who you are and what you love through it’s banal advertising. They can afford to remove any leftover culture and tradition your city might have had. You can’t afford to preserve it. Small businesses and young families don’t have the capital to compete with D.R. and Tim Horton, respectively. The two people who get that joke will really chuckle at it.

The other problem with living in an appreciating, medium-sized place is that no one is from there. Sure, that’s a bit of an exaggeration. Plenty of people are from here, but when I go downtown and run into people at the coffee shops and breweries, a large percentage are from somewhere else. That’s anecdotal evidence, but evidence all the same. I admit, as a California expat, I am part of the problem. I’m aware that I am also not from here.

The problem with “no one being from here,” whether it’s data-backed or not, is that it seems no one feels an obligation to this place. People who are from here seem to miss what it used to be, but don’t seem strongly inclined to do anything about it—except yell at city council meetings when someone wants to rezone lots near them to make them denser and more useful. People who aren’t from here overwhelmingly seem to treat this place like a commodity. It’s got the chains they’re used to and just enough, tolerable flavor to seem like it might be somewhere different than Anywhere, USA. It gives them something they like, or at least aren’t opposed to, and for many people, that’s fine living. I can’t pretend to understand it, but maybe they have a docility of spirit I don’t.

Ultimately, when no one feels an obligation to your city, your city becomes everywhere else. You’ve got a Lowe’s and a Chick-fil-A (or five). You can purchase overpriced, recently thawed food, if you can call it that, from any number of bland fast casual or chain sit-down restaurant. You’ve got Targets, Walmarts, Krogers, and Aldis. But what don’t you have? Well, anything that makes your city different than anywhere else.

Those of us in medium-sized cities have a front row seat to the city’s slow decline into Anywhere, USA. For the lucky few living in the right medium-sized cities, they get a front row seat to their town’s revitalization. The common theme, though, is you probably can’t afford a seat at the table.

Cities above 50,000 (and even cities above 25,000, probably) tend to experience what I think of as a civic bystander effect. The machinations of power feel too far away, and it seems like redesigning streets, improving safety, and supporting a local economy are the purview of other people. And it seems to me that most people think that other people should be doing it. To some degree, they may be right. The machinations of power in a city like mine may just be too far away to do anything meaningful.

So, what do you do? I see a few options:

Try the grassroots thing. Rally like-minded families who can show up at 3:00pm on a Tuesday when the city council meets. Bring up your concerns. Vote. This is probably the fastest option to start, but it may not be the most effective.

Make unto you friends of the mammon of iniquity. Make more money, exert as much power as you can. Pool your resources to increase your influence. This is probably the best in terms of power, but not best in terms of timeline.

Move. I don’t like this option personally, because of a philosophical opposition to how nomadic Americans tend to be. Especially younger ones. It does, however, allow you to try again somewhere that’s more aligned with your values or that you can exert more influence over.

Deal with it. To some degree, prayer and docility is the only thing you can do. Maybe your suburban hellscape is shaving years off of purgatory.

All of this does leave you in a bit of a quagmire if you’re someone like me. If you’re married and in your 20s or 30s, you’re looking to put down roots. Especially once you have children. If you want to be meaningfully involved in your city, you really have to live somewhere on the smaller end of city sizes (at least for almost all of us). The catch here is that for those of us in cities over 50,000, it’s pretty difficult to be meaningfully involved. That almost necessitates either option 3 or 4—move or deal with it. But that feels deeply unsatisfying

Maybe there’s a fifth option: learn to love it for what it is, as well as what it could be. That’s probably just the answer and what I need to accept. Lord knows I’m bad at just accepting the reality in front of me, in preference for the idealized “what it could be.”

I wonder if moving is a lot like a sprained ankle. The more you do it, the easier it is to happen again. If that’s the case, maybe deciding to love a place for better or worse is like breaking your ankle. Quite unpleasant, but ultimately your ankle is stronger for it—though that might not actually be true. I don’t really understand Wolff’s Law and all that goes with it.

Share

So, what’s the lesson in all of this? I don’t really know. Hopefully, there are other disgruntled young families out there who experience the same frustrations I do and can point me in the right direction. Maybe someone out there has solved this in their city of 100,000 people, and all my caterwauling is unfounded. I hope that to be the case.

Ultimately, it’s difficult to sit on the sidelines of a place you love and worry it’s losing its sense of being a “place” at all. Maybe that’s a good thing, at least in some ways. To be crestfallen that you can’t really do anything about your city’s decline into Anywhere, USA is to declare loudly that you care about the place. But it certainly doesn’t feel like most other people do.

I don’t want end this on a down note, though. I do still think things are getting better. The outskirts of my city and our suburbs are filled with chain garbage, but the core of the city, where I live, is experiencing a bit of a local renaissance. It’s certainly not perfect (they didn’t consult me on it), but it is good. Maybe young families really do just need to stay, make friends with the mammon of iniquity, and plan on a slow takeover that leaves a flourishing city for their grandchildren to enjoy—even if they never truly get to.

Restoring a Culture You Were Never Given w/ Trae Bailey of Fraternus

Joe Coleman sits down with Trae Bailey, editor, contributor, and key figure at both Sword&Spade and Fraternus to talk about what it means to be a man, a father, and a neighbor in an age of broken traditions.

Joe Coleman

Joe Coleman sits down with Trae Bailey, editor, contributor, and key figure at both Sword&Spade and Fraternus to talk about what it means to be a man, a father, and a neighbor in an age of broken traditions.

In This Episode, We Cover:

What Fraternus and Sword&Spade are, who they’re for, and how they work together to form men as sons, brothers, and fathers

The relationship between vice, virtue, and the body—and why the spiritual and physical can’t be separated

Why rootedness, proximity to family, and staying put may be the most countercultural (and important) thing a man can do right now

Why loneliness is properly understood as a hunger and how technology has dulled the ache without feeding it

The quiet comeback of physical things: print media, live events, and what trends like home brew beer and vinyl tell us about what people actually want

Chapters:

00:00: Introduction

00:16: What Are Fraternus and Sword &
